First Look

To First-Look or Not to First-Look?

While the debate between first-lookers and non-first-lookers is a hot topic, there are certainly pros and cons to each. Whether you choose the former or the later, everyone at Southern Oaks is here to make your day a magical one!

Couples who stick to not seeing each other before their ceremony want to keep with tradition or believe in the bad-luck superstition. We can certainly agree that there is beautiful emotion to be captured when couples see each other for the first time walking down the aisle. Just thinking about our grooms welling up at the sight of their brides brings happy tears to our eyes. If you’re a traditionalist and not pained by the thought of cutting into your reception time, opting out of a first-look is the route for you.

Southern Oaks Plantation

On the other hand, if you’re a move-busting couple, doing a first-look is definitely the way to go. One of the main reasons couples are opting for a first-look is to cut down the time between the ceremony and reception. All of the main photos can be taken before the ceremony, so you can get straight to the party after your “I do’s!” A first-look at Southern Oaks is also a great opportunity to take advantage of our sprawling grounds and areas that aren’t commonly photographed! We have so many gorgeous spots that would make for a perfect first-look backdrop. We’d be happy to show you some of our favorites during your tour!

Southern Oaks Plantation

Another little-known option is an “adventure session” the day after your wedding. If you have some time to spare between your ceremony day and leaving on your honeymoon, this is a great option for those couples who want to stick to tradition, be the life of the party, and get wonderful photos to boot. The idea is simple: get all dressed up one more time, head back to Southern Oaks with just the two of you (and your photographer of course) and take beautiful intimate shots without the stress of a timeline!

Southern Oaks Plantation Fall Trend Favorites

We might not have a chill in the air quite yet, but the first day of fall is upon us! That means it’s time to switch gears from those summer color palates and look forward to upcoming fall wedding trends. Here are a few that we’re excited about here at Southern Oaks!

Southern Oaks Plantation

www.southernoaksplantation.com

A new season means new colors to look forward to. We love jewel tones for the coming months – plum, emerald, and even burgundy! Rich colors pop against our lush landscaping and interiors. We’re always on board with a metallic touch, especially in the fall. Gold or even copper pair perfectly with jewel tones!

A turn in temperatures means it’s time to break out the long sleeves! This goes for our brides, maids, and guests alike! Long sleeve wedding dresses have made a splash in the past few years, and we don’t see that stopping anytime soon. Whether you go for a full sleeve or a peek-a-boo lace number, we love it all! As for the bridesmaids, if the dresses are sleeveless and it’s a bit too chilly outside, opt for a color-complementary shawl or wrap!

Fall florals are some of our favorites. Moodier colors and classic greenery mesh so well together! If you lean more toward the classic bouquet style, sprigs of berries can be intertwined to provide small pops of color.

We can’t forget to talk about the best part of all – cake! If you’re not a fan of frosting, naked cakes are having their time in the spotlight. Not to mention they are beautiful to photograph! On the other hand, traditional cakes can join in on the fall color trends as well. Adding greenery or berries to decorate the cake is a great way to tie in your wedding colors!

They will ensure you get all of the shots you’d hoped for, keep you and your bridal party on schedule and coordinate well with other vendors. They will also and and dress in a professional manner, and respect the wishes of you and your guests. You, your bridal party, and all of your guests have prepared for this event and will dress accordingly – its important all of your vendors dress professionally as well.

2. Meet them in person
The photographer is someone who spends the most time with you on your wedding day! Its important that you each have the same vision for your day, and that your personalities are compatible. This will also help you get a feel for how they will operate on the wedding day, and how they will interact with you, your partner and your guests.

3. Review their work
Is most of their work shot in the daytime, but you are having an evening ceremony and reception? Be sure their style aligns with the aesthetic that you’re hoping for so that your happy with your images.

4. Trust Our Recommendation
Our favorite photographers are the ones that have shot at Southern Oaks Plantation again and again, because then we feel comfortable recommending their work to our clients. We know they understand the ins and outs within our space, and they are able to be efficient while also still capturing those creative moments. Whats even better is that they are able to capture the most detailed and unique shots, because they are familiar with our venue. However, the most important detail is that they will ultimately treat you the same we would – as royalty!

5. Your photos are one of the most important details of your wedding!

My husband had one of my best friends call me and ask if we wanted to go to the Kemah Boardwalk. It’s a boardwalk with tons of restaurants, rides and all kinds of shops and booths. I really didn’t want to go because it was June and hot! But she talked me into it because we had a lot of our friends coming and we were going to let all the kids play. Once we got there everyone was already there and they told me we were going to do a group caricature drawing. I thought to myself…do they do group caricature drawings? Well, I went along with it and we all sat in the small both, about 20 of us, and we waited for the artist to finish our drawing. As people were passing by I could see the big smiles on their faces and I thought to myself…“man this must be a really funny drawing!” Just before the artist was finished, I noticed there was a huge crowd of people watching us and then he slowing revealed the drawing. It felt like I sat there in awe forever because it took me some time to process what was going on. Then I turned to look at my husband and he got down on bended knee and popped out a ring. I was so surprised and couldn’t even speak.

In your opinion, what is the best characteristic of Southern Oaks Plantation?
I don’t know if I could pick just one best characteristic but for me it was the ambiance. It is so romantic and beautiful. For my guests, it was the food – they still can’t stop talking about how much they loved the food at our wedding.

How did you and your partner meet?
Our company was hiring Operational Managers and Supervisors and I was the one who was doing the recruiting at the time. My husband asked me out weeks after that interview and I kept saying no and even after he was hired. He told me the very first time he met me, he knew he was going to marry me.

What made you select Southern Oaks Plantation as your wedding venue?
My husband’s family is from Louisiana and we wanted to have a wedding close to them. They have a large and very close family. We looked around everywhere and I found Southern Oaks online. The pricing was very reasonable, but when we made our visit I knew this was the place!

– What was your favorite moment of the night? The dinner we had together was my favorite. I loved that we could slow things down and talk about the wedding and our excitement.

My Husband and I traveled to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras with our family, it was my first time ever attending Mardi Gras. The night of The Zulu Ball, waiting for family to leave, my now Husband proposed to me with a gold coconut that said “Liz, I Love You! Will You Marry Me?” Of course I said, “yes!” After the proposal we went to the Zulu ball and had a blast enjoying our engagement!

What made you select Southern Oaks Plantation as your wedding venue?

One of my family memebers that live in New Orleans recommended Southern Oaks Plantation to my husband and I after we got engaged. They told us the venue was a great place and we would love it, so I made an appointment and we ended up loving it!

What was your favorite moment of the night?
I have TWO favorite moments! My first favorite moment was when I rode in the 1954 Rolls Royce as my entrance into the ceremony – I felt like a true princess once I came out of the car and walked down to my Prince! The second moment was the Traditional New Orleans Second Line, it was amazing, and my guests raved about how much fun they had.

Ringletts Salon (Hair Stylist) & GlamByAmandalee (Make-Up Artist). Ringletts Salon did an awesome job with my hair and bridesmaids’ hair. I showed them a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like and they made me look like a princess. Glam By Amanda Lee made me and my bridesmaids look flawless and I would recommend them both to future brides.

Was there a particular staff member at SOP that really stood out to you?

Lauren, the wedding coordinator at Southern Oaks Plantation, stood out to me because she answered all my question from the beginning process of my wedding until the end. I felt comfortable and secure that my special day would be great and it was! Lauren made sure I was stress free on my wedding day!!!

-What would you say to other brides considering Southern Oaks Plantation as their venue?

SOP is a great place to have your wedding, especially if it’s a destination wedding and your guests have never been to New Orleans. Every aspect of the venue is breathtaking, from the moment you enter the property to the inside of the venue. I recommend brides visit and then you’ll immediately see what we have seen and loved about Southern Oaks Plantation.

A Disney Inspired Fairytale Wedding!

Did you know that the Southern Oaks Plantation owner + operator, Mr. Bobby Asaro, is a huge fan of Walt Disney? We try to embody the feeling of being at Disney World through magical moments and enchanting experiences. Its no surprise this couple, also lovers of Disney, chose Southern Oaks Plantation as their wedding venue! With a love story that begins with a proposal in front of Cinderella’s castle, its no surprise this fairytale ends in happily ever after!

Tell us about your engagement.
Brett and I got in engaged in front of Cinderella’s Castle on February 11, 2017. It was the exact way I had always dreamed my future husband would propose! I am definitely a Disney fanatic and had always dreamed of a Disney proposal. We were on a trip with my best friend since elementary school and her boyfriend. My number one thing I wanted to do that trip was wake up early enough to beat the crowds, so we can watch the park opening performance in front of the Magic Kingdom, because I knew that it wouldn’t be happening much longer and Brett has never seen this before! Of course, we didn’t make it! I was so bummed, but on the bright side we were meeting some family friends who happened to be there at the same time. Little did I know, Brett had planned to meet up with them, because they were holding onto the ring so I wouldn’t find it! I am guessing they secretly gave Brett the ring and he proposed! Even though my whole family wasn’t able to be there, my mom was on facetime and was able to watch the whole thing! My grandmother, aunt, and younger cousins were at another park and we had a dinner reservation with them, and we were able to surprised them with the exciting news that night! This was definitely one of the most magical moments of my life, aside from my wedding at Southern Oaks Plantation!

disney-wedding-southern-oaks-plantation

In your opinion, what is the best characteristic of Southern Oaks Plantation?
In my opinion, it is very hard to choose just ONE characteristic that I like about Southern Oaks Plantation. They have so much to offer and that’s what makes this such a unique venue! If I had to pick, I would probably pick between how magical it feels to be on the grounds and how accommodating the wedding coordinators are! As soon as you walk onto the Southern Oaks Plantations grounds I am always in awe of how beautiful the plantation is, from the fountain in the front, to the swing hanging from the large tree in the front yard! Every time i have gone to SOP they have the most elegant music playing all throughout the grounds which gives it the most magical “feel”, just like Disney! SOP will literally go above and beyond to make sure you have the wedding of your dreams! Mr. Bobby knew my love for Disney from the few times i have gone to the plantation and he surprised Brett and I with an appearance of Mickey and Minnie Mouse at the end of our ceremony! They even played the EPCOT music while we watched the fireworks after our ceremony which is something I told them they could choose. My coordinator, Lauren, really payed attention to our interests and helped incorporate them into our ceremony!

What made you select Southern Oaks Plantation as your wedding venue?
Selecting Southern Oaks Plantation as my wedding venue was something I always wanted. When I got engaged, I knew from the start that this was the place I wanted to get married. My parents & my Aunt and Uncle got married at SOP, and I was lucky enough to be a part of both celebrations! I was around 6 & 7 when these weddings took place and Southern Oaks has been my dream wedding venue ever since! I also went to elementary school down the street from Southern Oaks and I can remember as a child always taking a peek when we passed. I was and am in love with this venue!

What was your favorite moment of the night?
My favorite moment of the night was obviously getting to marry my best friend at my dream wedding location! I do have to say that I felt like a real life princess coming out on a horse and carriage with my dad before the ceremony started! After the ceremony, we were able to watch a beautiful firework display on the front lawn of the plantation with the company of Minnie and Mickey Mouse, which was amazing because I didn’t know about this and I love Disney! It is hard to pick one favorite moment because the end of the night was just as magical as the start thanks to Southern Oaks Plantation and their team of coordinators!

What would you say to other brides considering Southern Oaks Plantation as their venue?
My advice to brides considering Southern Oaks Plantation as their venue would be to do it! You will not have a single regret! They will go above and beyond to make sure your night is exactly what you dreamed of. This location captures pure elegance and will be the most magical night of you and your future husbands life!
